Adrian G Streather was born December 25, 1958 in England with the DNA of many artists in his being. Adrian’s immediate family immigrated to Australia when he was still a child. He became an Australian citizen in 1974 and then joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) training as an Instrument Fitter. During his training and subsequent deployments Adrian was often acquainted with cameras and photography, but the nature of his work and his hobbies meant that Adrian did not feel his inner artist evolving just yet. Adrian served for 12 years in the military before moving into civil aviation. In 1993 he took the position of Engineering Manager with the Austrian owned airline Rheintalflug Seewald GmbH. Adrian worked for this company until October 31st 2003 when it was shut it down and he was shown the door. Partly of the result of this disappointment combined with the tragic passing of his daughter Natalie was that his inner artist was released full time. Fate was now holding Adrian’s steering wheel. Moving on required becoming comfortable with his discomfort and integrating tragedy into his life. Time dulls the pain, but it can never fully mend his broken heart…however, his grandchildren have repaired much of the damage…
Adrian’s first book was published in December 2003 and by 2004 it was a best seller. His second book was published in 2005 then more and more rolled off his fingers until by 2015 the total number of published books carrying his name exceeded 30 in four different languages with more to come in 2016, but during the book creation process another string to his artist’ bow was perfected. Initially Adrian relied on others to provide the bulk of his book photographic needs, but he very quickly realised that this was not only inefficient what he received often didn’t truly express his vision. He still uses others’ images, but his vision is now expressed in his words and his imagery for which he thanks his ancestors especially his grandparents Alice and Leslie Bartlett both professional photographers, and his other ancestors such as 17th Century soldier, writer, printer and publisher John Streather, 18th Century soldier poets Richard and Gilbert Walker, 19th century poets Lt. John Allen and Robert Daly Walker MD and others from a researched 40 family lines, all of whom added artistic DNA to Adrian’s make-up.
Adrian does not make a living however, from selling his shutter finger. He’s not a photographer for hire. He publishes his images as part of bigger projects. He does licence his imagery for others to use, he does sell prints, but apart from his authoring careers his main photographic interest is creating confronting social photographic campaigns. His latest ideas include: anti-domestic violence, female genital mutilation in the western world and anorexia. This website is an invitation for like-minded people to join him on his quests. The work that’s featured on this website is just a tiny portfolio snapshot without any naughty bits of what Adrian gets up to.
